Strictly No Dancing

  • 22nd Mar, 2009 at 1:07 PM

OK I realise I have been going to rock clubs for a long time (16 years and counting) but the state of the dancefloor these days upsets me.

We went out last night and it was clearly a case of standing with intent. These people weren't even making an effort. I'm not talking about the straight man shuffle, acceptable in the face of not being able to dance (or not having a sympathetic female friend to help you out), this is about standing in a circle with your mates and not making an effort. Again I might have forgiven them if it was to some recent emo junk, but we're talking about Marilyn Manson and Disturbed here.

I remember when I first started going out that dancing was an art form, you really made an effort and there was a sense of shared experience on the dancefloor. These days it seems that wide open space in the club is another place to lounge with your pint.

Kids today, eh?

Whatever else happens today...

I have accomplished something I have been trying to do for years.

Get a copy of Etienne by Tori Amos into my music collection. Fantastic.

"Maybe I'm a witch
Lost in time
Running through the fields
Of Scotland by your side"

The Killing Joke

  • 3rd Oct, 2008 at 4:44 PM

Last night I saw Killing Joke in concert, and also got a glimpse of my future.

As one of the youngest audience members, I saw what I will become in twenty years - still wearing mostly black, drinking pints, doing funny things with my hair and looking for a seat or wall to lean against because my bones hurt. Quite sobering really. This is where old alternative Britain resides, in the dark recesses of gigs on a Thursday night.

In case you're interested KJ were pretty darn good, proving that good music is not only produced by the young and pretty, as mtv would have you belive. I miss the days when the clubs played them instead of emo. But then, maybe that is the sign I should stop going to clubs and just come out of the woodwork for gigs.

Give Them The Slip

  • 6th May, 2008 at 7:46 PM

Another crazy episode from the life of Trent Reznor.

A whole brand new nine inch nails to download for free! And it doesn't suck!

It seems he is moving away from having a fan club (boo, hiss) and just giving everyone everything. You lucky, lucky people. My capitalist side wants to pay more and get more, but ho-hum. Enjoy.

the spiral

Can I just say the the spiral rocks?

To explain, this is the official nine inch nails fanclub. I thought I was too old for that sort of thing, and isn't it terribly sad to pay money to show how much you love something? However, I have been utterly converted. Not only do random presents of tshirts and stuff appear and we get to go to all the gigs and be at the front, the online community is fantastic. It is filled with the nicest people who want to help each other and enjoy themselves, not just go on about how sexy Trent it (true, but still..) I can honestly say that it is an internet community which enriches your life rather than sucking it away. And we go drinking in the pub together.

You see, it's almost normal!
