How I longed for a pair of DMs when I was a teenager. That's what all the cool grungey kids were wearing. But I wasn't allowed.
Maybe my Mum was trying to keep me a little girl a little while longer, or she thought they were plain ugly. I ended up being bought a less imposing, shorter (and probably much higher quality) pair, but they never cut it.
Then I went to university and in charge of my own clothing budget I was able to purchase them, and wear them everyday until they leaked water - not very good when you live in rainy Glasgow. Their lifetime was about two years. My first pair was purple, then I had a sucession of black pairs. Everytime you bought a pair they was the madatory purchase of a box of plasters to go with them, until they were broke in, and then they wer ethe comfiest bouncy soled shoes in the world.
Eventually I fell out of favour with the DM. They weren't suitable for work, the the grunge movement was dead, I was tired of putting my feet through the initial pain. I still kept a pair, but unless the weather was bad, skater trainers were the order of the day - and still are for general wearing.
So what has sparked this walk down memory lane? They have released a version with crosses my old school nostalgia and rock tendencies with my current improved sense of fashion style. I know what I want for Christmas....
