I have major problems with some of the stuff I see in Japanese comics, but a stupid law will not help anyone keep out of trouble. A responsible body, like the BBFC is a better option.

Okay, stuff like this is totally frakked. Whatever strange fascination manga has with naked teens, it is still just pictures. And they could carry this law over to other comics, including (but not limited to) Watchmen, Sin City, Strangers In Paradise, Lost Girls and the list goes on.

In the US they even had a law passed that made the suggestion of under-age sex in media a crime -- which pretty much made Lolita (the book and the movies) taboo, and of course most teen-age sex comedies. The Supreme Court eventually overturned it, but it caused a major consternation in anti-censorhip groups for a long time. The law was meant to stop and/or criminalize digitally created pitcures of kiddie-porn, but its scope was too broad. While I am very anticensorhip, I have no problems with laws taht protect the rights of individuals, and those too young to protect themselves. But those laws need to be properly written, or else they become too broad and cover things that should be permitted, whether we want to see them or not.
